The gorgeous vignettes (the scene about the snowy Christmas spent at a friends’ home in rural Virginia just made me feel warm and happy). And the sentences â€" again, my Go d, the sentences! As a Salter fan, would you say All That Is is representative of his other fiction? RJS: That “My God, the sentences!” thing is pretty universal to Salter. Our fellow Rioter Jeff says his words feel inevitable, and I think that’s right on. The gorgeous writing, the evocative settings, the sex that is hot and vivid without being vulgar, are all Salter staples, so All That Is is representative in those ways. But each story does something different (which is a thing that I think separates Salter and makes him more interesting, at least to me, than Philip Roth), and they’re all worth reading. I haven’t made my way through his whole backlist yet, but I’m working on it, and I’m so glad to hear this one gave you the itch. And I totally agree â€" the asides in which Salter gives us a full picture of a minor character’s life in just a few pages are one of the highlights. They could be distracting in many other writers’ hands, but here they help us understand Bowman and his world more completely. There’s so much to love in this book, but I just have to say that I adored it that Bowman worked in publishing. Few things are more delightful in fiction than a great passage about books and the reading life, and Salter’s take on it made my heart sing. Especially this: “He liked to read with the silence and the golden color of the whiskey as his companions. He liked food, people, talk, but reading was an inexhaustible pleasure. What the joys of music were to others, words on a page were to him.” Any favorite passages you marked? GZ: Yes! I actually tweeted the “inexhaustible pleasure” part of that passage you just quoted when I first read it. It made me so happy one of those times when you feel like the author is talking directly to you. And here is another favorite: It was love, the furnace into which everything is dropped. I’m not sure what it is about that line, but I stopped and read it about four times, and it was one of those fantastic bookish moments where I felt like I’d been punched in the gut. I loved that Bowman worked in publishing, too. I felt like the novel was maybe Salter’s subtle love letter to the publishing industry â€" dirty parts and all (he has that shady agent guy being the first one to make authors pay him to read manuscripts, etc.). Not only are homosexual couples being denied marriage rights but also adoption rights in several states. There would be no harm to society by allowing homosexuals the right to marriage or to legally adopt; the positive impacts it would have on society are far greater then the negative effects. Homosexuals should get the same rights as any other United States citizen. For the United States to have a functional society, allowing all citizens, regardless of sexual preference, would be in everyone’s best interest to allow homosexuals the right to arry. Looking back at history, it was not that long ago that black and white marriages were not accepted in society. Accepting black and white marriages has made the United States a stronger society. Gay and lesbian marriages would not harm anyone; however, it would improve and enhance the lives of those couples involved. Allowing gay marriage would have positive effects on children to gay couples; in addition, allowing homosexuals to mar ry and adopt would help place some children, who may never be placed into a family, find families through adoption. Homosexuals can be found in every race, religion, age group, country, state, and social group. Discrimination toward homosexuals persecute their choice of lifestyle. The issues of military employment, legal rights for couples, and acceptance within society need to resolved. Some ways to help put an end to this discrimination is to put the military services on a legislative plan prohibiting discrimination against homosexuals, allow for couples to be legally married. People need to realize that homosexuals are just like them. Homosexuals are found everywhere and are good people and need to be recognized not for their sexuality, but for who they are. The problem lies with the heterosexuals, those who establish firm opinions against gays, based solely off of stereotypical thinking, or their own feelings, rather than rational or factual information. One of these stereotypes tends to be that lesbians want to act and look like men, and vice versa. Although this may be the case in some homosexuals, it is not true for every single individual, thus a biased stereotype is formed. A stereotype such as this may cause an extreme hostile attitude, as well as discrimination, against a homosexual individual. Also, homosexual jokes are constantly made every day. As funny as this may be to a heterosexual, imagine how this single joke could damage a gay man’s self-esteem or even his social acceptance. A straight male or female could easily laugh at this joke, as many have, while a gay man hears this joke and takes it to heart. He could easily feel inferior to a straight male, or just as easily be offended by the use of the word fag. Society doesn’t realize when certain words are used, they can offend a variety of people. Not to mention, the words gay, fag and queer have found their way into our everyday vocabulary, all of which can cause different emotions to different people. For instance, when someone says â€Å"That’s so gay† a heterosexual would view the word gay as meaning strange or different, which completely changes the meaning of the word and associates homosexuals with being weird. ?Many Heterosexuals believe we must not pass any laws regarding discrimination of homosexuals. If we didnt pass the law about discrimination, the homosexual man and his lover would have to continue searching because they were denied equal treatment as a straight man. This unequal treatment is the reason homosexuals are trying so hard to gain a law against discrimination. There is also no justification to deny a specific occupation to a homosexual, because of their sexual orientation, unless there is a threat to an individual. For instance a homosexual man wants to become an accountant. What is keeping him from accomplishing this goal? A major hindrance-a state licensing law. The same goes if another homosexual would like to become a hairdresser, or perhaps even a used-car dealer. This same Law prevents people with certain sexual orientations from achieving their goals in life. This is not the American dream so many have heard about. America is supposedly the land of the free, a land of equal opportunity. Literary Response to Gulliver’s Travels 1.) Interpret the ending of Book IV in Gulliver’s Travels. How are we to understand Gulliver’s very strange behavior? In Book IV, Lemuel Gulliver’s fourth and final journey places him in the land of the Houyhnhnm, a civilization of intellectual, sensible horses, and senseless, inferior, and indecent humans. As Swift does throughout the novel, he ties his satire closely with Gulliver’s perceptions of the different world around him in his last adventure; these chapters do not change the method of Swift’s satire. During Gulliver’s experience in the land of Houyhnhnm, he encounters the wise and friendly Houyhnhnms, or horses, which are superior to the Yahoos, or salve humans. Although Gulliver is referred to as a â€Å"Yahoo,† the Houyhnhnms treat him with more respect than their captives, due to his intelligent division from the Yahoos. In theses chapters Gulliver comes to realize how much he loathes the human race, after being in contact with the Yahoos. Gulliver finds himself in a society controlled by creatures usually at the dispatch of humans, and in a sort of oblivion of his own, between the humane horses and the untamed, unruly Yahoos. The humans and their inability to compare to the Houyhnhnms instantly disgust him. Gulliver then grows fond of the Houyhnhnms and beings to enjoy life conversing with them about the differences in their worlds. He no longer desires to return to humankind. Soon Gulliver is accepted as an intellectual among the Houyhnhnms. He begins to think of every human he has ever known as Yahoos, and no longer has any respect for them, he thinks of the Houyhnhnms as the most respected and well-mannered living things on the earth. Gulliver is given a room, and is treated as a member of the family. However due to his acquired fortune, the Yahoos begin to complain and Gulliver is forced to return to Europe. He does not want to return to Europe, but decides that he would rather live with the barbarians that he once lived with, than with the uncivilized Yahoos. Analysis section 1 – Background/to identification of problem Pims Pumps are an industrial pumping company which are involved in the distribution, installation and maintenance of industrial pumping units. The company has a large fleet of vans and many specialised tools and lots of equipment. Currently all of the equipment is logged in and out of the workshop and vans and this information is stored on paper. Analysis section 2 – identification of the prospective user(s) The prospective users are the managers of the business all of whom are computer literate and are already using a computer system for other aspects of the business. The company have a small network of computers installed and all involved are competent in opening and using Microsoft access 2000 Analysis section 3 – identification of user needs and acceptable limitations The system needs to be able to store large amounts of data about the whereabouts of equipment, it must be able to search through the data for any specified criteria, it must be able to be edited, it must be secure and user friendly. The user must enter his/her name, the date and time, the registration of the vehicle they are taking it to, the name of the piece of equipment and the serial number of the piece of equipment. At the end of each week the logbook except for the most recent page is taken to the admin office and stored in a filing cabinet in date order. When a piece of equipment is missing, needed of has been damaged the user can then refer back to the log book to find out who if anyone still has the piece of equipment and who else has used it recently. This can be very time consuming, as the user has to visually scan through the logbooks until he comes to the entry, which could be anything up to 15 pages. The user interface for the initial user will be very secure to try and prevent accidental damage to the system however the management features will be able to be accessed by the management team through a password. Quantitative performance considerations The system is going to be run over a long period of time and so will need to be able to store a very large amount of data. This s one thing I will not be able to test to its full extent however I can estimate through hardware performance whether the system is adequate or not. I will have tables for vans, equipment, warehouse and users and will link these together and display them on one form. There will be a menu form giving the user options and security passwords for management to access and edit existing data or to view existing data. All of the data entry will be validated and the tables will be set to certain data types to try and ensure the user is entering the correct information. There will be four main tables related to bookings, employees, equipment and vehicles. There will also be four forms based upon these tables and then a main menu form for easy navigation of my database system Design section 2 – Description of modular structure of system The system will be based around 4 main tables. These are TblEmployees, which contains information about the employees that work at the company. TblEquipment, which lists equipment, details about it, its current location and a list of who has recently used it. TblVehicles will contain a list of all of the vans that Pims Pumps use and contain a list of all the equipment that is currently in each van. TblBookings will record all the bookings in an out that a piece of equipment makes and records the equipment and employee ID numbers.
